At 6’8”, Tal Thompson, or Tall Tal, is a fifth grade teacher in Columbia, SC.
Tal began his teaching career in 1998 in Michigan. Through the years, he taught in Michigan, Illinois, Colorado, and now South Carolina.
He is the proud father of two amazing boys and has been married to his best friend, Ann, for 17 years.
As a “military brat,” Tal grew up living in many different places. He was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, and has lived in numerous states around the U.S. prior to graduating high school.
Working with kids and being an educator has always been Tal’s passion.
He received his elementary education degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1997. Later, he received his Masters in mathematics from Walden University.
In 2015, Live with Kelly and Michael chose Tal as a Top 4 Finalist for America’s Top Teacher.
He also became a National Board Certified Teacher that year and in 2016, he received the South Carolina Citizen Education Elementary Teacher of the Year Award.
Tal’s success derives from his ability to connect, push, and cultivate confidence within his students.
He takes the lessons learned working with children and translates them in a way that will inspire positive and productive changes in people of all ages.
Tal’s message starts with the powerful shifts that occur as the emphasis is put on cultivating confidence within an organization. False confidence destroys innovation and growth.
Instilling earned and real confidence is the key to productivity and success. The real world needs people that can collaborate effectively with their peers, have the passion and desire to creatively solve problems, critically think through the most complex situations, and effectively communicate with each other.
The real world needs people with…CONFIDENCE…EARNED CONFIDENCE! Without earned confidence, people cannot effectively do any of these things.
As a speaker, Tal will ignite and unleash the potential in children and adults alike. Participants leave inspired to produce change, upgrade their level of production, and aid others in reaching their true potential greatness.
An inspiring and innovative educator, Tal conducts workshops and seminars around the country to help teachers, schools, and school districts raise their game to truly inspire and motivate today’s youth.
He stresses the power of connection, collaboration, and confidence building as tools to achieve higher expectations and results.
Note: This entire first keynote is really 3 keynotes in one. The speech changes near the midway point to focus on the target audience and will shift to the correct takeaways for that particular audience.
EARNED Confidence: Surefire Strategies to Cultivate EARNED Confidence in Today’s Youth
What is the biggest enemy to confidence? FALSE confidence! It is destroying the potential in today’s youth and the product we are sending into the workforce. Today’s youth do not embrace perseverance and are not equipped to learn from failure. This keynote addresses this dilemma that is crippling our youth, and therefore, the future of our country. Participants will be taken on a comparison journey between young adults that are equipped with EARNED confidence vs. young adults equipped with FALSE confidence. Tal takes the audience through a ten-step process to cultivate EARNED confidence at school, home, organization, or corporation.
The audience will be equipped with strategies to change the confidence culture of their home, school, organization, or corporation.
- Audience 1: Schools, clubs, parent organizations, etc.
- Audience 2: Administrators, District Personnel, School Culture Organizations, Reform Crowds, Legislators, etc.
- Audience 3: Corporate/Business/HR * Note: This Corporate focused keynote is a work-in-progress.
The Missing C: How Confidence is the Foundation for Cultivating the other 4 C’s of 21st Century Learners
This second keynote is based on one major component that is missing in education. It is meant to inspire change within schools, districts, educational policy, and more. In the education world, the word is out that we need to get students ready for the 4 C’s (Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity) of 21st Century Skills. This speech is about the missing C. Confidence. In order for the 4 C’s to be obtainable, students must first acquire confidence. With confidence comes perseverance, self-motivation, the ability to take risks, and the willingness to embrace failure. Until we equip our youth with confidence and the attributes that come with it, we will never reap the benefits of the 4 C’s generation.
The audience will be equipped with a transformational strategy that can be instilled into their educational/organizational philosophy.
- Audience 1 = Schools, school districts, administrators, teachers, school staff, etc.
- Audience 2 = Any educational associations, conferences, etc.
- Audience 3 = Any child or parent based organization, clubs, associations, etc.
When I saw Tal speak he took me on the roller coaster of emotions. I laugh, I cried and left feeling better than when I arrived! He has unbounding energy on stage and the audience cannot help but participate right along with him. His message is strong, moving and inspires change! Every person in the education field will need to hear him speak.
Tal Thompson’s passion for making a difference in the classroom is so evident in his presentation. In his presentation to my pre-service Teaching Fellows, he inspired them to be innovative, courageous and passionate teachers. His message was so powerful that many of them made reference to his presentation many months later as they began their student teaching experiences and how it inspired them to be their best in their own classrooms. When Tal speaks to a group, attendees can expect to be energized by his ideas, passion and obvious care for making a difference in education. He challenges everyone to be teacher leaders.
Tal is a exceptional speaker. What a powerful force for good! Tal’s message of confidence got the audience on their feet and wanting more! The educational system here in the US desperately needs more Tals.
SO much energy! I love Tal’s enthusiasm and the way his used the song to start the speech with the video, then got the audience up on their feet to sing along with him – that was something fun, unexpected and magical.
Well, Tal made it thunder outside during his speech. Need I say more? But really I felt the sheer excitement and emotion of the many children his mission is touching. Similar power to what I feel when someone scores at a World Cup game. BIG emotion for LOTS of people.
